The checkout clerk's here seem to live in fear of their bosses and managers. I cannot tell you how many times I have checked out, purchasing cut to length lumber. I always try to make this as easy as possible, keeping species grouped together, and the lengths in one foot increments and stacked in a way that you really would only have to measure once. I even total everything up for them so they could, if they wanted to, just type it into the computer. But every time, they have to measure every single piece, and scan the barcode on every single piece. And most of the time they tell me that it is of course absurd, and then they point to the cameras and say that someone is watching. Similarly, the self checkout, which has eight registers, rarely has more than two open. When asked why, we are told that's a manager doesn't like them. So instead the line grows unnecessarily.
