I had purchased a 1,800 SF single family house in Sierra Madre that came with a 35+ year old heating and air conditioning system which needed to be properly evaluated and possibly replaced. After discovering that the American Home Shield home warranty policy that my seller had purchased for me was worthless, I screened HVAC service companies and called a couple. The first furnace company was helpful ($39 service fee), but did not put their conclusions in writing and because I had contacted them through Home Depot (a mistake on my part) they were required to add a 25% referral fee to Home Depot on to any future bill (that 25% fee would be applied to any purchase of a new system). The second HVAC service company rep was not interested in evaluating my old system, and simply tried to sell me a new system. Frustrated, I called the Southern California Gas Company.
