My house was built in 1912, and when we bought it, it was clear that the exterior side door had seen heavy use for a long time. In fact, the door was practically falling to pieces, barely opened, didn’t have a deadbolt that latched, and was secured by the type of interior flip-over bar that you see in hotel rooms. It certainly wasn’t usable! Clearly, this needed to be addressed. We first had a custom wood door made, sized a little bit big to allow for fitting. But of course, it needed to be installed, and the door frame, threshold, etc. were all in rough shape. Now, the husband is a handy guy, but it was pretty obvious that this project was way above his pay grade. I called ten different handyman services and half of them didn’t even call me back, but Bill promptly returned my message and made an appointment to come actually look at the job (I didn’t trust anyone giving an estimate from a texted photo!).
